Parents in Dehradun often ask us when to bring a child for their first dental appointment. The Indian Society of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry recommends a first visit by age one, or within six months of the first tooth appearing — whichever comes first. That sounds early, but the goal is prevention, not treatment.
The first visit is usually short. The dentist counts teeth, checks jaw development, looks for early signs of decay, and discusses feeding habits — including prolonged bottle use at night, which is one of the most common causes of early childhood cavities in Uttarakhand households.
Preparation at home makes a significant difference. Avoid using dental visits as a threat ('If you do not brush, the dentist will give you an injection'). Instead, read a simple picture book about teeth, play 'open wide' games, and let your child watch you brush. If you are anxious about dentists yourself, children pick up on that immediately.
Choose a clinic environment designed for children. Bright, uncluttered treatment rooms, staff trained to work at a child's eye level, and a dentist who explains each step before touching the mouth — these reduce fear far more effectively than sedation for routine check-ups.
Common treatments for children at our Dehradun clinic include fluoride application, pit-and-fissure sealants for permanent molars, habit-breaking appliances for thumb sucking, and gentle fillings using tooth-coloured materials. Pulpectomy (root canal for baby teeth) is performed when necessary to save a tooth until the permanent one is ready — extraction is not always the right answer.
Between visits, stick to basics: brush twice daily with a rice-grain-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste for under-threes, and a pea-sized amount for older children. Limit sticky sweets and packaged juices. Rinse with water after eating if brushing is not possible immediately.
If your child complains of tooth pain, sensitivity to cold, or you notice brown spots on teeth, do not wait for the 'scheduled' visit. Early intervention is cheaper, faster, and far less stressful for everyone involved.
